If someone was about to start in your field

I have been a teacher of a high school for about 5 to 6 years. I have gathered enough experience about this profession and how to handle students efficiently and help them in getting a proper education. At the initial stage of this business, I have faced difficulties in working correctly. As per my realisation, a person new in this profession needs to know a lot of things before starting his career.

Are you very anxious while entering the classroom for the first time? Have no fear at all. Just think of the people who are providing constant support to the teachers and inspiring them all the time. You need to keep in mind certain things to become a successful teacher and avoid any form of hindrances while teaching.

The 3Cs
The 3Cs that you should consider is clear, consistent and compassionate. You need to be clear on your expectations for behaviour as well as performance. A new teacher must be compassionate enough for their students to show them that he cares for them and has the willingness to help them learn new things and get success in life. Consistency is another factor that you need to take into consideration when you are about to start your career as a new teacher. The students can know that they are getting what they are expecting from their teacher in the classroom.

Try to grow every day
You should remember that teaching is one of those professions that expects the teachers to be perfect with very less to no on-the-job training. You can change the lives of others, but the first few months of your career comprised of the learning phase and there is only growing. You try to find some strong and positive-minded teachers who are always optimistic about everything and observe them minutely to learn from them. Try to treat every student equally like your kids, whether it is from the junior school or high school. Don’t take any form of unruly behaviour personally.

It’s good to have fun
As you are a teacher, you should maintain silence in the classroom at the maximum level, but sometimes it is also necessary to laugh and have fun so that the students do not get bored and a good relationship is established between the students and the teacher. Don’t be afraid of laughing in the classroom. I am having a friend who is also a teacher and told me that he was too shy in laughing in the classroom as he is a teacher. But one thing you should keep in mind that if you don’t laugh, the students will not laugh, and a friendly atmosphere will not be created.

Lashing out will get you nowhere
Just screaming at the students will not help at all and the result will be zero. This might frighten them. This seems that they have gained adequate control and forcing you into desperate hollering.

Students are not your BFFs
You should keep in mind that you are a professional and should behave in that manner. You will mix freely with your students but maintain a boundary.

Focus on the positives and not the negatives
You must be optimistic and take the positives out of everything and avoid the negatives. Try to observe and analyse the needs of the students in the school and help them accordingly.

Develop relationships with school personnel
Many teachers feel that the principal of the school has the maximum power and he is the best person to connect with regularly, it is not always right. Relationships need to be built with other personnel of the school as well. You need to treat all of them with respect so that they can be helpful to you in the school.

Never say no
Don’t ever say no to anything and try to avoid it as far as possible. The authorities or the administrators of the school always want you to be a part of a team and work accordingly creating a coordination among all. Many students tend to leave schools early, but the teachers stay back and discuss various matters. You need to be a part of the group of teachers and follow what they are doing.

Find your work-life balance
Always try to keep yourself insane and learn properly when you should step back. Teaching is a profession that keeps you engaged 24X7. You will be discussing with your friends and family about your students. You should not always think about your teaching and students. Instead, keep specific time for your family and maintain a balance between your work and life. Try to engage yourself in some extracurricular activities or get a membership to a gym.

Take advantage of a new teacher
You might think that being new to something and doing for the first time is a dreadful thing, but try to treat this as an asset. You are not dreaded unlike some veteran teachers and hence try to be open to new ideas and experiences as to how the method of teaching can be improved.

Remind yourself of your why
On distressing days when the printed material heaps up, a student discusses with you, or everything just is by all accounts turning out badly, you'll begin questioning yourself as a teacher. It's occasions such as these you must remind yourself why you picked this calling in any case. Possibly it was a teacher you had or enthusiasm for helping other people. For me, it notes my students have given to me, the benevolent thanks from guardians at graduation, the espresso and doughnuts a student purchased for me that morning, a compliment from my central and other trivial things. The child hangs out with you on Friday evening when you merely need to go home and rest as the weekend progressed; however, you stay at any rate because your classroom is their place of refuge. It's the selfie demands from every one of your children when you convey them to the craftsmanship exhibition hall. The reality they knew the fine art at the historical centre in any case and were eager to see it.

Other points that a new teacher should take into consideration before starting his career are described below.

  • Make friendships with the important people of the school very quickly immediately after joining, not only the principle but also with the other lower level staff members
  • Try to keep every document within folders and be systematic in everything you do
  • Always be yourself so that the students pay respect to you, understand the right and wrong and see the right through you
  • Always stick to the rules of the school and ensure that the students maintain discipline as well
  • You should remember that it is not the way you do things, it is the outcome that everyone is concerned with
  • Try to be explicit about race among the students. Acknowledge any form of discrimination, whether it is any racial or if cultural and take necessary actions to mitigate the issue
  • Never accept any form of invitations from parents
  • Learn the ways other teachers are collaborating with the students so that it becomes easier for you in the classroom

Some of the practical things that you, as a teacher must know.

  • How to efficiently manage time in school for every activity?
  • How to efficiently deliver the lessons to the students coming from diverse religious, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds so that they can understand correctly?
  • The purpose of the assessments to be done
  • How to make the educational contents authenticate as well as contextualise?
  • The difference between plain hard, rigorous and complex
  • Planning as to how the curriculum can be followed and finished on time
  • How to motivate students in the class and identify their weak points?
  • How to guide the parents to teach their children effectively
  • To become aware of and respond to the medical conditions of the students
  • Lots of team-building exercises
  • Ways to entertain the students
  • How to become accountable to the students, administrators of the school, colleagues, media, other communities and reliable sources?
  • To know the ways to keep a talkative, disruptive and inattentive student focused
  • How to entertain the students for the extra-curricular activities like sports, access to library and cafeteria
  • How to help in the coordination as well as execution of the field trip

The first few months of your career as a teacher are vital, and this is the time you should learn adequate things that will help you in the rest of the rest of your career. The future of many students is relying on you, and it needs to be taken into considerations and dealt with severely. I have tried to explain my level best as to how you can succeed as a teacher in your career.
