THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF EDUCATIONAL GAMES AS A MEANS TO PROMOTE BETTER LEARNING

“Play is our favorite way of learning.” – Daine Ackerman

The quotes itself portray that learning can be developed through the use of gameplay. This is because of often many face stress and burden of learning through the traditional knowledge of deriving information from books. Thus, the use of games in the learning process acts as a boon because countless skills are learned in this playful nature along with knowledge which involves creativity, teamwork knowledge, critical thinking skills, and others.

Educational games are designed explicitly with the sole purpose of providing an improved education and learning environment through practical knowledge. Moreover, it is designed to serve the purpose of allowing the students to learn about certain subjects they like or dislike, expand their concept of theories and models, reinforce professional and educational development, identify a specific culture or historical event or to help them learn a specific skill. The educational games are important because it upgrades the evaluation power of psychological perspectives among students by making them think critically and out of the box. The educational games are also important because it acts as an interactive play, which teaches rules, goals, problem solving, adaptation and other skills through an effective representation of narrative storylines.

The practice of educational game-based learning has its origin rooted in the early civilization where the men of the middle ages developed learning about war strategies by playing chess. In the present world, there is an instance of Frobel gifts which are used for educating and providing learning feasibility to children in the initial years of their learning phase. Moreover, in the present scenario, various online education games have been made to develop ease in the learning process, be it in the kindergarten or at the high school stage. Thus, it is seen that games have been affluently used in the learning process from the ancient times as well as in the present. Therefore, to understand how learning through education game is substantiated let at first find out its theory which made it so affluent and ease of use.

The theory of educational games is that it attracts the learners through its fantasy element of narrative storylines which motivates and allows the gamers or learners to develop an effective learning process. The theory also states that students during the learning process through educational games, they are allowed to express their views which led them to develop more improved knowledge about leadership and social skills. The present education programs are mainly based on providing knowledge through learning based on theoretical perspectives. However, implementation of educational game based learning helps in using strategies that urges students to participate in an interactive session of a learning experience. Thus, this provides an effective learning experience as the students had to execute critical analysis for reaching the end of the game. This in turn also creates an opportunity for the student to apply a wider experimental thinking and receive feedback for the same in the forms of rewards.

The theory of educational game states that the reason behind its influential practice is due to its effective delivery of learning experience for the students in the form of an enjoyable moment rather than making it mundane for them. They also help the learners to develop experience by critically solving real-world challenges within a risk-free environment. This is because while learning through educational games the learners execute many mistakes which may be able to create a grave situation in the real world of traditional learning. However, in the virtual world of gaming, these mistakes are considered as minimum and no grave situation arises which makes the students feel safe and develops trial and error process.

The delivery of education through gaming helps the students to apply their theoretical knowledge within the virtual world which represents the real to understand the validity of their learned aspects. Thus, this creates a scope for better learning as the students involved in the learning process of educational games with their own wish and without fear of abuse due to failure. Moreover, the theory of educational gaming proves to deliver a better learning because the students are allowed to use their analysis in solving games related problems helping them to understand their expanded potential of critical thinking. Thus, based on this theory of educational gaming, it is adopted in practice in learning to deliver educational information in a better way.

The educational gaming for its successful practice needs to be developed according to the type of subject which is focused on educated through its use. This is because if the game is unable to focus on the key idea of learning about the type of particular subjects, it fails at the proper connection with the students resulting in delivery of hindering learning. Moreover, the educational games developed for practice needs to properly tailor the demographic factors regarding the students who are to be taught. The game needs not to be too difficult to solve or too much familiar for the students to be educated through it. It is seen that both the digital as well as non-digital educational games are prominently in practice to deliver improved learning experience.

During the initial years of learning, it is seen that the children are extensively involved in using various types of board games to gain knowledge about alphabets, shapes, simple mathematics, color and others. Thus, by using these games, it allows the parents as well as the teachers to provide effective information to the children in a playful nature with the children’s proper psychological engagement. This type of education provides improved learning to the children at the initial stage because they can relate the learned knowledge to the practical world. Moreover, the practice of educational games facilitates improved learning by helping the students to remember adequate information.

The educational games are mainly adopted in school to help the student develop learning with ease. The games are developed by using innovative technology, and the theme of the games includes case studies related to the specific subject or information the student required to learn. The students require solving the case studies and during the process of solving, the student applies thinking and knowledge. This, in turn, helps them to gain potential information in a better way through their own interpretation and analysis of the problem-solving nature. For example, in providing information about mathematics various case studies related to the nature of mathematics to be taught are analyzed and solved by the students in the games. This led to developing effective knowledge regarding the way to solve the mathematical problems in future assignments. In comparison, when the traditional education process is used for the students, they were seen to face difficulty in learning as many could not interpret or understanding how to solve the mathematical problems.

The high schools use various educational games to deliver the students' knowledge about the concepts which are required to shape their future. For example, in providing initial education about how to build real-life civil structures various games like Minecraft, World of Goo and others are used. Moreover, in art,  game-based learning is practiced which helps the students to develop knowledge about an improved understanding of art theories and the way the theories are required to be implemented in the real world. The practice of game-based learning has also been able to develop critical thinking attributes within the art students along with team working capabilities. In providing education about coding and computer technology to kids, various educational games like code combat, robozzle and others used. These games provide an opportunity for the students to develop understanding about coding without even fear of memorizing them. Thus, using educational games helps to develop better learning because they deliver the knowledge in a fun way without bothering the students with the fear that they need to study long hours.

Various professional institutions during their delivery of education related to professional courses adopt the use of simulation games to deliver improved learning ways to students. For example, in educating pilots about the way to operate flying on planes, various simulation games are used in the learning process. The simulator game which is used is based on the representation of a real environment within the flight thus helping pilots to learn through their use before actually letting them go flying planes in real. The practice of educational games has proliferated because it delivers cognitive development among the students. Moreover, the fascinated use of gaming among the students also relates towards using this process in the education so that they develop better learning opportunity without feeling the stress of education.

The practice of educational gaming as a means of providing better education is appropriate because it increases the student engagement along with retaining their interest towards learning. The use of educational games allows the creation of effective enthusiasm among students towards learning which was otherwise not possible by adopting traditional learning. Moreover, a practice of educational gaming allows instant feedback to the students to let them identify their position in comparison to their peers. The educational gaming practice leads the students to interact and make social connections, in turn, helping them to gain improved learning by sharing each other's experience and building competitive teams.
