DON'T TELL STUDENTS TO FOLLOW THEIR PASSIONS

Someone says “Should we tell our kids to pursue their passions or to be realistic about their life? Live their dreams or live in reality?” This controversy regarding appreciate child following their passion or make strong disagreement with their passion would represent both the advantage and disadvantage of student’s passion.

There is an important question that I always face - do you have enough passion for your study and your hobby? During my educational period, I could not be able to give the answer. However today I realize that passion about one thing can bring contentment, happiness and personal growth in your life.

As an educator, I always appreciate the passion of student and I always say them to contribute their effort in particular areas where they want to grow up.

Common miss conception about passion
We consider passion as one of the important keys to happiness and success, which enhance our ability to meet our requirements and achieve our goals. However research shows, there is a different kind of passion which can be unhealthy and irrelevant to your ability and strength.

Passion can bring different definitions to different people. With my personal experience, I can say, that most of the students have a high level of miss conception of passion. They many times involve in unhealthy practices and consider these practices as their passion. Selection of wrong passion and or wrong choices can spoil; children’s educational career. At this point, I think it would be beneficial to both children and their parent to say don’t follow the passion.

Cultivate your passion without following it
Many students cannot make any difference between following and cultivate the passion. I always suggest a student cultivate their dream and passion, rather follow it. If you follow something, it means you are going to discover something and then you will match it with your job. On the other hand, cultivating means imply your dedication and effort in your behavior to build your passion which makes you able to fulfill your dream and reach the success in your life.

Through cultivating your passion you can analyze your ability and leverage your value as well as can shape your working ability to attain sooner success.  It is obligatory to say that, a passion that you would select must be healthy, relevant to your ability and would be supportive for your future. During my professional career, I met lots of teachers who acknowledge the things that many of the students are involved in following their passion rather than cultivating it. As per their view, most of the student select their passion by getting influenced by other students and lose their ability to discover and implement the new thing.

Student perception about passion
Most of the students get excited and influenced by other student’s passion and choice which make them get confused in their life. However, I always think about the question- Do we all know about true passion? The answer is still unknown.  In many times people get confused about a sensation of severe excitement for any particular feeling and the perception of deep, passion.  For supporting your child regarding their passion, you have to clear the proper definition of passion. Passion and excitement are two different things. Excitement is temporary and it can be replaced with another feeling. Whereas passion is a deep-rooted feeling that stays for a long time and fosters behavioral and mental changes in students.

In many times, we can see, students fall in love with music, dance or painting. However, after sometimes when they find out themselves as unable and unsuited to do this, they change their opinion. This is not true passion; it can be considered as an infatuation which can easily be replaced by another one. A true passion for something would impact on your physical and mental state and you would be desperate to achieve your goal.

Relevancy of advice regarding following the passion
Teachers are always known for making standard advice reading career of their students. During my professional career, I experienced that fact, in spite of getting proper advice from teachers, it might occur that student cannot be able to cope up with the standard set by the teachers. Many students have their own preference, on which their strength lies. Teachers in many time pose a severe restriction on these choices without evaluating the usefulness of these dreams.

Making students forced to avoid their passion and choices can be harmful to the mental and physical strength of students. Therefore it is important for teachers to understand the beneficial aspect of the dedication as well as the efforts of the students and then decide the restriction on a dream is relevant to a student’s ability or not.

With my personal experience, I can say that standard advice can be irrelevant or useless for some students. Many students are passionate about extra curriculum activities such as painting, music, dance, and writing. Many teachers and parents focus mainly on education and want their child to attain good marks in their schools. Therefore, they force their child to concentrate on a study which poses severe mental pressure them.

I do not say that education is not important. Obviously, education is the priority in our life which enhances our perception and knowledge regarding anything. However, focus only on education is not a good solution. There are many students which cannot be able to attain good marks in their school and colleges. In many times it can be stated that education is not the sole aspect of student life.

An advantage of standard advice in fostering a passion
In many cases, standard advice may be helpful to foster passion. I personally feel that passion is one of the important aspects of student life which enhances their ability to reach their target. The standard advice from teachers and parents may be useful to encourage students to chase their dream and find out their passion.

However, in my educational period, I suffered a lot due to unsupportiveness of my parents. My hobby was to be a professional photographer tutors and I expressed this to my parents. They wanted that I would be a doctor and for this reason, they send me abroad. This was the huge mental distress for me that not only impact my psychological status but also my physical health.
